Swiss architecture found throughout Berne reflects the influence of the Swiss Mennonites who settled in the region in 1852. More than 3,600 Amish operate farms in the area. Their horses and buggies can be seen at hitching posts in town on shopping days.

The Swiss Heritage Village, a 22-acre outdoor museum, has 13 buildings that depict the lives of Berne's early Swiss settlers; included is the oldest Mennonite church in Indiana.

Another point of interest is the Berne Furniture Co. at Berne and Behring streets; the manufacturer of upholstered furniture offers tours by appointment.

Berne Chamber of Commerce: 175 W. Main St., P.O. Box 85, Berne, IN 46711; phone (219) 589-8080.
