there's no presumption in peer,
much less peremptory emptiness,
to whom can crack a dictionary.
but who presumes to umpireship,
is a nonpeer captain of umpiry.

Realities : Reconstructible and Irreconstructible

Life is full of recalcitrant realities. I'm sure you know what I mean — things that kickback and recoil when we try to change them or move them. Things like that tend to give us second thoughts about a philosophy of constructivism, the idea that we construct reality, literally.

Theme One Program : Re-En-Visionary Programming Project

  • If anybody is looking for a programming project, I will post here some data on the Theme One Program that I worked on all through the 1980's. The aim was to develop fundamental algorithms and data structures to support an integrated learning and reasoning interface. I wrote up a pilot version of the program well enough to get a Master's degree out of it, but still haven't gotten around to writing up the complete documentation. Below are some links to what I've put on the web so far.

Elegant Graveyard

Textep, Textime, Evolving Text Analysis

  • I started a project scarecrow-named Textep, for Text Evolution Project, at Textop/Jon Awbrey/TEXTEP. The idea here is to take text-outlining into the fourth dimension, developing tools for tracking and analyzing how texts evolve over time. (I may change the name to Textime, not sure yet.)
  • The driving vision here actually goes back to a line of work on "Idea Processors" that I pursued and programmed all through the 1980's. The very primitive prototype that I mocked up then integrated an Adaptive Indexer or a Sequence Learner (the "Empiricict", you might say) with a Propositional Modeler (the "Rationalist" half of the brain). I eventually managed to exchange some of this work for a Master's in Psych (Mich State, 1989), and other parts of it I followed up during what turned out to be a decade-long capstone of work in systems engineering at Oakland University (the one in Michigan). But the full model has yet to be implemented by me or anybody else in the time since. So ...
  • One application that I have in mind is the analysis of texts that develop in the article and policy spaces of wikis. I started a couple of WikiProjects at WikiPedia to explore a few pressing applications (crying needs), so we'll see how that goes:
  • Well, scratch that, as the WikiPolice just did — for what they call a WP:POINT violation — don't bother trying to figure out what that means, it's just another one of those all-purpose argument-or-anything-else stoppers that they have over there. These guys keep trying trying to lower my expectations for the future of WP. Hah! That's pretty ironic, if you catch my drift. Jon Awbrey 14:40, 6 September 2006 (PDT)

Updated DYK query Did you know? has been updated. A fact from the article Hypostatic abstraction, which you recently created, has been featured in that section on the Main Page. If you know of another interesting fact from a recently created article, then please suggest it on the "Did you know?" talk page. Gurubrahma 10:05, 12 January 2006 (UTC)
