Desciption

This is a guide on how to play MKV files on Mac OS X Lion for those who used to use Perian to watch Matroska movies in QuickTime Player on Mac OS X Lion, and now find that some files which used to play well with Perian on Snow Leopard now can't play on Mac Lion, or for some users they may only play the audio or video of the MKV files.

Question

"I watch a lot of media on my MB pro via quicktime. I have a variety of different media formats and the Perian pluginlet quicktime play everything! Since I upgraded to lion I can't play most of my media such as mkv. files. I re-installed Perian and in an unexpected turn of events I was prompted to download QuickTime 7! That's the only problem i've encountered after upgraded to Mac OS X Lion so far! Do any of you guys know how i can fix that? Thnx!"

Tips

MKV containers are probably a bit of a mystery to most regular Mac users. Unlike .mov, .rm and .wmv, MKV is not associated with a particular player. If you use Perian to watch Matroska movies in QuickTime Player on Mac OS X Lion, you will surprised to find that some files which used to play well with Perian on Snow Leopard now can't play on you Mac Lion, or for some users they may only play the audio or video of the MKV files, To play MKV files on Mac OS X Lion you will need to use MPlayerOSX or VLC which both support these containers. And they are all free.

Convert MKV( (rev. 12 or 13) to QuickTime or MKV Players on Mac OS X Lion

These excellent and free multimedia players can tackle many of the video formats unknown to QuickTime. They contain a decoder to decode the MKV files. They will also play many of the formats you will find inside the MKV file. It is possible, however, that you may find it difficult to decode *some* .mkvs with these players because Matroska can actually be used for storing closed proprietary codecs like Real Video.
