The year 2000, or MM in Roman numerals, saw the world's trouble spots facing new circumstances as the 12 months drew to a close. Some of the changes were disconcerting, others were optimistically democratic -- all pointed to a different global scenario as the world continued its march toward the 21st century.

Fighting between Palestinians and Israelis erupted in late September, leaving hundreds dead (most Palestinians), and pushed the government of Prime Minister Ehud Barak to tender his resignation.

In Yugoslavia, nationalist leader of the Serbian culture, Slobodan Milosevic, was ousted from power in a nearly bloodless people's uprising in October.
