Fort De Soto Park - St. Petersburg, Florida
Fort De Soto Park is off I-275 at Pinellas Bayway; two toll causeways are crossed en route. The 1,136-acre park occupies five keys; Madeleine, St. Jean, St. Christopher, Bonne Fortune and Mullet. Plants and wildlife are protected; pets must be leashed. Open daily dawn-dusk. Nature tours begin at various locations Saturday and Sunday at 10. Free. Phone 727.866.2484. Fort De Soto, on the southern end of Mullet Key, was begun during the Spanish-American War but was incomplete are war's end. Its guns were never fired in battle. There are walkways around the fort area. A pamphlet outlining a self-guiding tour along the Historical Trail is available. A 90-minute guided walking tour of the fort is offered Saturday at 10.
